Networking and sharing learning are two of the key elements of DU Professional and both were in abundance at our recent Ways of Working Showcase.

Launched in February 2024, DU Professional is a range of activities and opportunities aimed at supporting the development of Professional Services (PS) colleagues.

Since launching, all DU Professional events have been fully booked and the Ways of Working Showcase in March was no different, with over 120 PS colleagues coming together.

Alongside an update from the Professional Services Workload Project group, the event provided an opportunity for colleagues to join sessions on ways of working. This included how to run effective meetings, using email productively and digital capability. There was also a focus on building networks and connections with colleagues, and an opportunity for some Easter crafting and mindfulness.

What you said

Jo O'Neill Jones from our Social Sciences Faculty Office said:

It is an excellent opportunity to network with colleagues and ensure you are kept up to date with the progression of current projects and initiatives.

“There were really insightful sessions that have helped me look for further training,” said Nathan Wakely, Library and Collections.

Eleanor Glenton, from Research and Innovation Services, said: “It was a great morning of showcasing modern working practices.”

“I thoroughly enjoyed this event - meeting up with colleagues past and present, and all of the bitesize sessions I attended. I left feeling very uplifted,” said Paula Nesbitt from Computing and Information Services.

Some colleagues even took the opportunity to attend as a team. Simon Kepczyk, Department Manager in our Department of Biosciences explained why their PS staff decided to attend together.

“We took the decision as a full PS team to sign-up for a varied morning of events and the opportunity to learn more about ways we might look to streamline and improve our working practices.

“We had a great time and picked up hints and tips that we’re keen to take back to the office. We also took the time after for a team lunch, an important part for us of making connections with one another.”

What’s next?

There are a range of opportunities for PS staff through DU Professional. This includes a focus on Communities of Practice and our 'Coaching and de-mystifying' series, with more planned for next academic year.
