Helping us shape a more sustainable Durham

Durham inspires
to read

It’s only been a few weeks since our last update – but a lot has happened at Durham when it comes to sustainability…

Highly commended

The University had projects nominated in several categories at this year’s County Durham Environment Awards, and were Highly Commended for our Community Partnership (DUSVO Gardening Club), Green Business (Sustainable Development internships) and our Hedgehog Friendly Campus group!

Check out the full results, as well as some amazing local projects on the awards site.

A busy month on campus

We hosted a number of activities for Fairtrade Fortnight earlier this term, from our coffee morning (with Fairtrade tea, coffee and sugar kindly provided by Bidfood, our catering supplier) to our Fairtrade Bake Off at Durham Students' Union, which saw entrants using Fairtrade ingredients to bake a whole range of tasty creations.

We also hosted Durham’s first ever clothes swap in collaboration with Durham University Sustainable and Ethical Fashion Society.

The event worked on a circular economy principle, giving students and staff the opportunity to donate clothes and swap them for some new items for their wardrobe. All donated clothes that were left un-swapped were then donated to charity.

Did you know…you can make a fast fashion pledge on the MyGreenspace app and get 300 GreenPoints? You can also get 500 points for buying second hand! Start logging your points today.

Finally, we’ve seen the continued success of RecykeY’Bike’s pop-up shops this term, with even more scheduled in for next term. Keep an eye on our social media or sign up to our bulletin to stay informed. The pop-up shops offer a free bike service and a chance to buy a refurbished bike, so they’re worth checking out if you’re in the area!

What’s coming up?

  • If you’ve noticed any signs of spring around Durham, why not upload a photo on the MyGreenspace platform to share with the community. You can earn 300 points for a photo submission!

  • We’re taking part in Hedgehog Awareness week this month and through until May. Keep an eye on our social media for activities to get involved.
