Help save energy at the flick of a switch

to read

Did you know, switching off your PC every night and at weekends for a year can save the equivalent energy needed to make 30,000 cups of coffee?

We'll be running our Switch Off campaign throughout this term to help spread awareness of the little things you can do to help reduce your carbon footprint and save energy.

Whether we're at home, in College or at work, our small changes can have a huge impact when we all take action.

Keep a look out for our energy saving top tips throughout this term or see how you and your household can get a head start below - from lowering the blinds to making an energy efficient cup of tea!

  • Make use of natural light
Are you working in a shared space alone? Try using task lighting or make use of natural light if possible. If you do need to use lights, make sure to double check the space you’ve been working in and turn off any lights when you leave.

  • Keep spaces warm
If you have curtains or blinds in your accommodation/office, close these before you leave for the night - trapping the warm air will keep the room warmer for when you come in again in the morning. If you know that you’re going to be out of your room/office for a few days then turn the thermostatic radiator valve down by a couple of settings.

  • Use what you need
If you’re making a hot drink to enjoy on your break, try to fill the kettle with the amount of water that you need, rather than filling it entirely. The UK wastes £68 million worth of energy a year by overfilling the kettle! (BBC)

  • Make sustainable choices
Are you buying a new piece of equipment? Is there an energy efficient model available? It is better to spend a little bit more on an energy efficient item and spend less on running costs.

  • Report it!
Is there an outside light on during the day or a faulty light sensor in a building? Or notice a room that is always too hot or too cold? Let us know so that we can fix it at estates.help@durham.ac.uk

Why not log your positive actions on My Greenspace? Not only would you be joining amazing community of staff and students doing good, but you could also be in with a chance of winning this month's £20 voucher!
