Durham Fringe Festival returned this July, featuring five unique new shows, written, directed and performed by students here at Durham.
Among the performances at this year’s festival – which ranged from comedy and musical theatre to multilingual storytelling – was Durham University Light Opera Group’s (DULOG) new musical ‘Leaves on the Line’, which follows a group of strangers on the train journey from London to Edinburgh, the darkly comic ‘Cottage’ from student group Sightline Productions and brand-new sketches from The Durham Revue.
Theoretical physicist and stand-up comedian Dr Fran Chadha-Day from our Institute of Particle Physics Phenomenology also explored the stuff that makes up the universe, answering the bizarre science questions she gets from her friends and family and showing the funny side of science.
Only in its second year, Durham Fringe has provided a fantastic opportunity for our students to showcase their talents alongside an international group of performers.
The Durham Revue will be just one of several student shows that were able to hone their new material in Durham before also heading up to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August.
Another group travelling to the world-renowned arts festival is Wrong Tree Theatre company, who took their five-person play ‘Delivery’, an exploration of connection and home, north to Edinburgh after performing to a home crowd.
