A summer of entertainment

to read

Our students and staff are bringing a whole schedule of exciting theatre, music, dance and exhibitions to Durham with the return of ‘Summer in the City’, an entire season of entertainment taking place at venues across the city and beyond.

From Durham Cathedral to the Land of Oz

Starting with the highlight of our student music calendar, around 200 student musicians from the Palatinate Orchestra, Brass Band, P'ungmul (Korean percussion), Gospel Choir, Chamber Choir, Choral Society and more, performed 'Summer in the City: Fanfare' at the annual Music Durham concert in the Cathedral on Friday 3 June.

Shortly after, the student-run Durham Film Festival will take place over 8 and 9 June in the ODEON Luxe cinema in Durham City centre. Supported by the British Film Institute, the festival will show short films from three categories: Student Filmmaker, North East Filmmaker and General (open to non-students anywhere!).

On Sunday 19 June, Durham University Orchestral Society (DUOS) will be travelling to the Sage in Gateshead to perform a programme including Shostakovich 10, with tickets already on sale. Durham University Ballet Company will also be performing ‘The Wizard of Oz’, a ballet for all the family, at Gala Durham, Monday 20 and Tuesday 21 June.

Entertainment on your doorstep

Home to Durham Student Theatre, the Assembly Rooms hosts a new show every week and is set for a packed programme of performances from students in June and July, including adaptations of ‘The Addams Family’ and ‘Percy Jackson and the Lightening Thief’.

Several of our student theatre, music and comedy societies are also planning to take part in Durham’s very own Fringe Festival from 24 – 31 July, before taking their shows up to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in August.
