Durham appoints new Academic Registrar

Dr Monika Nangia has been appointed as Academic Registrar here at Durham, and will begin her role on Monday 2 May 2022.

Dr Nangia has more than 25 years of experience in Higher Education management, and has held a number of senior positions in UK universities - most recently as Director of Student and Academic Experience at SOAS University of London.


A proven track record

Monika brings a proven track record of delivering transformational change through clear direction and strategic leadership. This includes the development of innovative techniques in improving the student experience as well as strong institutional relationships with government departments and regulatory bodies.


She is experienced in supporting Universities in managing and developing successful academic portfolios and partnerships that enhance strategic growth and reputation for the institution and improve student learning, participation and success. 

Ensuring a seamless educational experience

Monika will be a member of the senior leadership team under Vice-Provost (Education), Professor Alan Houston. She will have direct responsibility for leading and managing the Academic Office, enabling departments and faculties to offer outstanding programmes of study, ensuring students have a seamless educational experience, and giving external stakeholders, including regulators, confidence in Durham’s offer.

Committed to social justice

An English graduate, Monika has a PhD in Political Science and Government with a thesis on the dynamics of policy implementation in inclusive education.

Monika is deeply committed to social justice and to the role of higher education in reducing inequalities and recognising diversity. She is also a passionate promoter of the role of women as leaders in higher education and champions the need for increased representation of people from black, Asian and other ethnic minority backgrounds in leadership positions.
