Curtain up on Durham Student Theatre for 2022

to read

Our talented students celebrated the lifting of Covid restrictions with exciting returns to the stage after a challenging and frustrating two years.

Durham University Light Opera Group (DULOG) staged their annual musical, the Broadway classic ‘Guys and Dolls’, at Gala Theatre Durham. They delighted audiences with their fabulous musical numbers and intricate dance routines, that were a credit to the professional quality of the show.

The 48th annual Durham Drama Festival brought eight brand new student written plays to three venues across the city, Gala Theatre Durham, the Mark Hillery Arts Centre at Collingwood College and The Hub at Mount Oswald. The varied programme included work from international students and settings from Shanghai to Italy and Austria to Hungary. Performances included Beautiful Nothing, a one-woman show exploring sexuality and gender, and The Children of Yesterday, a 20th century historical drama covering Europe during the tumultuous time between 1870 and 1952.

The plays which entered the festival were judged by a panel of industry professionals, with awards being handed out at the Durham D’Oliver’s.

Over 100 students were involved in producing the festival and they are now hoping to take some shows on to the National Student Drama Festival and Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

To top off a brilliant start to 2022, the entertainment continued with laughter from The Durham Revue, our very own comedy troupe, who appeared alongside students from Cambridge Footlights and Bristol Revuians, at Gala Durham in ‘ComedyFest’ back in February.

Keep up to date with Durham Student Theatre and find out what’s coming up next on their website.
