RIBA National Awards 2021 - Teaching and Learning Centre

to read

We are delighted to announce that our Lower Mountjoy Teaching and Learning Centre (TLC) has won a Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) National Award 2021, an award given to buildings across the UK in recognition of their significant contributions to architecture.

Everyone learns in different ways, and we’re looking for creative ways to ensure that all students can thrive.

In 2017, we engaged FaulknerBrowns Architects in Newcastle to inform and support our ten-year University Strategy with the development of a new University Masterplan. Central to both was the provision of enhanced teaching and learning facilities to support an increase in student numbers, enable the adoption of new teaching methods, and to create facilities that could be shared by all students rather than be aligned to specific faculties or departments.

The TLC opened in September 2019 and has lecture theatres, 450 spaces for individual and group study, nearly 200 computer laboratory spaces, high-specification facilities and top-of-the-range digital equipment, as well as an excellent café!

There’s also an Education Laboratory, where all sorts of new teaching methods are being trialled – including using video games, virtual reality and even Lego! Everyone learns in different ways, and we’re looking for creative ways to ensure that all students can thrive.

Congratulations to everyone involved in the development of the TLC, an excellent addition to our academic estate and the City.

The TLC is an outstanding example of how we strive to deliver on our goal of providing world-class teaching and learning facilities for our students. Why not take a quick tour here?
