Our Energy and Sustainability Team, with guidance from the Environmental Sustainability Strategic Planning Group (ESSPG) reviewed our sustainability data, targets and action plan, with the aim of creating an ambitious new sustainability strategy.
The new sustainability strategy focuses on four key areas:
- Leadership and governance
- Estates operations
- Teaching and research
- Community and engagement
Together the projects will ensure we have ambitious targets in place covering all the University’s carbon emissions.
To deliver the strategy, we have produced a new plan, aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, which includes 95 actions covering: biodiversity, carbon emissions, ethical investment, transport, purchasing, and waste.
We are also working to develop a new Carbon Management Plan and have engaged with the Carbon Trust to support on two key projects.
The first project, which was completed in Easter Term 2021, was to develop a long term ‘science based’ target for our on-site emissions. The second project, which will be underway in Michaelmas Term 2021, is to conduct an analysis of our ‘Scope 3’ emissions, which includes procurement, business travel and waste. Together the projects will ensure we have ambitious targets in place covering all the University’s carbon emissions.
