Matriculation 2021: Welcome to Durham

Highlights
to read

At the end of September, as a whole University community, we had the honour of welcoming all our new students formally to Durham through our wonderful tradition of Matriculation – a rite of passage for those joining us to begin their studies.

Held over two days, the ceremonies offered each student in every College the opportunity to join with each other to begin their unique journey with us.

With Antony’s inspiring focus on encouragement, the sense of belonging that our University provides and an important emphasis on the unique experience at Durham that we know is like no other, it was a moment for all to think about their futures and the opportunities they will bring.

Our Acting Vice-Chancellor, Antony Long and Student’s Union President, Seun Twins led proceedings, both delivering inspiring speeches that set out what it means to be part of Durham; and were joined by both the Mayors of Durham and Stockton.

With Antony’s inspiring focus on encouragement, the sense of belonging that our University provides and an important emphasis on the unique experience at Durham that we know is like no other, it was a moment for all to think about their futures and the opportunities they will bring.

Importantly, Antony also asked all students to “do Durham well”, to take pride in the respect students show to one another and staff – to be tolerant, generous, curious and to listen and understand.

Seun delivered a passionate address about our life changing and life enhancing University and Colleges, eloquently highlighting the journey of discovery and sense of belonging and inclusivity for students which we all care so deeply about.

If you would like to listen to Antony's speech from our Matriculation ceremony, you can access it here.

And a final note from our Acting Vice-Chancellor to all students, whether new or returning: “Welcome again to Durham University, work hard, think deeply, liberate your potential and enjoy your time with us“.
