The original Greenspace identity was created in 2010, to bring together all of our environmental plans, policies and procedures.
To freshen things up we launched the Greenspace Movement - asking people to get involved and carry out small acts, which make a big difference. Our Greenspace Timeline documents the story so far; from launching the Green Move Out in 2005 to achieving the Eco Campus Platinum Award in 2020. Find out more about the Greenspace Movement here.
Greenspace Festival
On the 23 June, staff, students and members of the public were invited to take part in our very first Greenspace Festival. The event took place at the Tent at the Racecourse and celebrated everything from eliminating single-use plastics to research on sustainable energy. Thank you to everyone who took part in the event.

My Greenspace App
During Easter Term we trialled a behavioural change and sustainability awareness App called ‘My Greenspace’. Over 100 staff and students took part in the trial, where users could win points for activities in areas ranging from biodiversity to waste. Vouchers for local businesses were awarded to the top points scorers each month, and a £200 charity donation was arranged for the highest scoring team. Thank you to everyone who took part and provided feedback.
Future plans
The Energy and Sustainability Team has been busy attending University Council meetings, developing new plans such as a new science-based target and biodiversity action plan. We also organised workshops and forums for students and staff to share ideas and shape our future sustainability strategy.
Have an idea for cutting carbon?
In the last five years, we've reduced Durham University's Carbon Footprint by 34% (full report).
Every year £100,000 is available to spend on carbon saving projects. These can be anything from training or publicity materials to timer switches or new equipment. Applications are welcome from all members of staff from across the University. For more information visit our website.
Green Move Out Success
Finally, we were ‘Highly Commended’ in the 2020 Green Gown Awards in the student engagement category for the Green Move Out, which we delivered with the help of student volunteers during the first Covid-19 lockdown.
